Tamil Nadu is in the forefront of the Welfare of Backward Classes, Most Backward Classes and Denotified Communities. BCs/MBCs/DNCs constitute about 67% of the total population of the State. It is the objective of the Government to take up measures for the all round development of these people. This website is being hosted for their benefit.
Classification of Castes: The socially and educationally Backward Class citizens of Tamil Nadu have been classified as BCs , MBCs, DNCs. A list of castes under each category is maintained as per the provisions contained in Article 15(4) and 16(4) of the Constitution of India. A detailed tabulation indicating Serial No. in the State List and corresponding Serial No. in the Government of India OBC List for the same community is also available.
Explanation for Most Backward Classes / Denotified Communities: Most Backward Classes: Communities which were found to be as disadvantaged as the SCs but could not be declared as Scheduled Castes (SCs), because of the non-existence of untouchability factor were classified as Most Backward Classes (MBCs). All the schemes available for BCs are commonly applicable for MBCs also. In addition to this certain additional educational concessions in the form of Full Tuition fee concessions, liberalised scholarship benefits are extended to them. Denotified Communities: Communities with specific District restrictions, who were subject to severe repressive measures under the Britishers under the Criminal Tribes Act were originally notified as Criminal Tribes. Immediately after Independence, the Government of India repealed the Criminal Tribes Act and consequently all these communities were notified by the Government as Ex-Criminal Tribes and subsequently amended as Denotified Communities (DNCs). All the schemes available for BCs are commonly applicable for DNCs also. In addition to this certain special schemes like running of Kallar Reclamation Schools, certain additional financial educational benefits in the form of Full Tuition fee concessions, liberalised scholarship benefits are extended to them. |
